THE CHOREONAUTS

THE CHOREONAUTS – AFRO-EUROPEAN NAVIGATIONS IN DANCE

Three choreographers from the African continent - Nadia Beugré, Phumlani Nyanga, Qudus Onikeku and three European counterparts Renate Graziadei, Helge Letonja, Sebastian Matthias were invited to realize artistic projects with stimulating cultural viewpoints.

The three European choreographers traveled to Abidjan, Mpumalanga / Johannesburg and Lagos respectively, to experience their partner’s work and artistic themes on location and respond to impulses with artistic questions. Through these constellations, the project initiates the confrontation of European artists in residence, with specific socio-political contexts, subjects, work structures, dance-aesthetic forms and the dancers from their African partners. The navigation of the CHOREONAUTEN stands for their departure from known artistic processes.

With a tentative, searching, questioning movement, they set course for encounter, challenge and understanding. The tandem teams’ transcultural dialogue became a productive artistic method to initiate further exchanges in the respective partner country and in Germany.

Ten stages and four festivals became platforms for the artistic positions and concerns. In Bremen, the works of THE CHOREONAUTS formed the heart of AFRICTIONS, festival of contemporary dance between Africa and Europe.
