Helge Letonja

The ocean, the multilayered metaphor of longing with an organic intrinsic life, is both a symbol and an aesthetic reference for Helge Letonja’s new ensemble dance piece, THE DRIFT. In this second production of his trilogy DisPLACING Future, the choreographer continues his work on the themes of migration and wandering together with the renowned contemporary composers Kunsu Shim and Gerhard Stäbler as well as visual artist Kyungwoo Chun:

The oceans of the world separate and connect abandoned homelands and longed-for shores. Here, the traces of those who haven’t reached their destination are lost.

THE DRIFT explores their quest, asks what motivates them, and rescues their stories in the rhythm of the ocean. Swarm behaviour, currents and turbulences become the parameters of the dance that starts where the individual encounters the universal.
