Helge Letonja

“Darkland” is a choreographical exploration of the poetry of disappearance, the ambivalent beauty of decay and the destructive processes of our fast-track lives; a danced view of the interaction between outer change and inner transformation. “Darkland” focuses on ruins, material and immaterial wasteland, and utilises the symbol of dereliction to question creative motivation. Fragmenting, falling, breaking, trembling and stumbling are moving pictures, which contrast with fluent choreographical recomposition of fragile, temporary stability and identity.

In “Darkland”, Letonja’s five dancers further pursue the themes of his previous production “Shaum”: the dark traces of beauty, intertwined with shadow worlds, give form to unseen beings, and explore the political dimensions of placelessness. How and in relation to what do we orientate ourselves, when we no longer possess a sense of home, familiarity and belonging?
