The dancer and choreographer Samir Calixto was invited by steptext to be artist in residence in Bremen in January and showed first excerpts from his latest work >Dido Æneas Us & All< in this context.
Now the duet is being performed in its final stage version. Inspired by the opera Dido and Aeneas by the English composer Henry Purcell, which focuses on the tragic romance of the two mythical characters, Calixto deals with unrequited love and yet goes far beyond it: he questions our incessant longing for our other half as a state of loneliness of the individual
in the midst of society. The two dancers – Calixto himself and the Italian Erika Poletto – embark on an artistic dance journey in which the physical intensity of the dance reveals the many shades of what we define as love.
Samir Calixto highlights timeless aspects of dance in his choreographies. In the encounter of contemporary dance with outstanding works of cultural history from classical music, philosophy and literature, he devotes himself to essential questions of human existence.
‘Dido Aeneas Us & All’ is a co-production of Matter Affects (NL), Scenario Pubblico (IT), Schouwburg De Lawei (NL)/ steptext dance project (DE), Dansverkstæi (IS) and Ungmennafélag Stokkseyrar (IS).
