PRÉLUDES
Helge Letonja
The dance-like round dance follows the piano cycle of the 24 Préludes op. 28 by Frédéric Chopin. Chopin’s compositions, considered to be masterpieces, become the crystallisation point for a return to and examination of the poetry of dance. In solos and duets, choreographer Helge Letonja condenses the different emotional facets and dynamic qualities of the music into expressive contemporary dance. The dancers’ artistic range unfolds on the basis of the clearly defined musical core motifs of the Préludes: Sometimes in imitation, sometimes as counterpoint, the palette ranges from melancholy pensiveness, through dense passages of intense urgency, to stormy, erratic cascades. In this way, the dancers create a sensual arc full of movement details and individual dance languages.
